When a child hits, kicks, or throws things
Aggression from a child healing from trauma is a signal about the body, not the character. Here is how to stay steady tonight.

There is a hole in the wall now. A shoe went through it, or maybe a fist. The child is standing in the middle of the room breathing hard, looking at you with something you cannot read. You are trying to figure out what to do with your body and your voice, and your arm is sore where they swung, and you are not okay.
Before anything else: your safety matters. The child's safety matters. Both are true, and neither cancels the other out.
What's really going on
Physical aggression in a child healing from trauma is almost always a body in survival mode. When a nervous system that has been wired for danger hits the edge of what it can hold, the oldest programs take over. Fight is one of them. The thinking brain is not in the room. What you are looking at is not a kid making a choice. It is a body running a protocol it learned when protocols were the only thing keeping it alive.
This does not make the hitting okay. It does not mean there are no limits. It means the limit you set cannot be a lesson in that moment, because the part of the brain that learns lessons is offline. The only thing that works in the moment is steadiness, safety, and space.
There is often a second layer: shame. Many kids who lash out feel terrible about it afterward. They hit, and then they panic, because they know what hitting means in their history. They are waiting for you to become the kind of adult they used to know. When you do not become that adult, something very slowly begins to heal.
You are in First Climb, and the wheel doing the work is Safety. This is the clearest signal a child can give that Emotional Well-being and Secure and Predictable Environment need attention. The spokes at the center of the work are Calming Strategies, Safe Expression, and Physical Boundaries. The long game is not teaching the child not to hit. The long game is giving the body enough other ways to express the feeling that hitting stops being the first tool it reaches for.
What to try tonight
Make space, not contact. If a child is in fight mode, stepping closer almost always makes it worse. Take a step back. Put a piece of furniture between you and them if you need to. You are not rejecting the child. You are making room for the body to come back.
Lower your voice and slow your movements by half. A raised voice tells the body the room is getting more dangerous. A low, slow voice tells the body the room is going to be okay. "I am here. I am not leaving. I am going to give you some space."
Name the limit without threats. "I cannot let you hit me. I am going to move over here. I will still be in the room." Short. Clear. No consequence tacked on. The limit is the information. The relationship is the anchor.
Move breakable things out of reach calmly. If items are being thrown, remove them without a lecture. Do not clean up glass in front of them while they are still dysregulated. Just make the room safer, step by step, without commentary.
When the body comes back, do not ambush them with a debrief. Offer water, a blanket, a quiet activity, a short sentence of warmth. "I love you. That was hard for both of us. We will talk about it when we are both ready." The conversation about what happened lands later, when the brain is back.

Over time, the most helpful practices are the ones that happen before the meltdown, not during: daily regulation time, a named safe spot in the house, heavy work and movement during the day, and a shared vocabulary for "I am getting to the edge" that the child can use before their body gets there.
If aggression is frequent, escalating, or leaving marks on you, your partner, siblings, or the child themselves, it is time to bring in a trauma-informed therapist right now. This is not a failure. This is the Nurturing Network doing the exact job it was built for. You are not supposed to walk this stretch alone. Many kids also benefit from occupational therapy for sensory needs, which can dramatically change how the body holds stress during the day.
For the next two weeks, keep the house predictable, build in more movement during the day, and notice the moments the child used a word instead of a fist. Those moments are trail markers. Name them out loud when you see them.
Questions caregivers ask
Is it okay to physically hold my child when they are out of control?
Only if there is an immediate safety risk and you have been trained in safe physical intervention. Holds can retraumatize a child who has been restrained before, and they are emotionally and physically risky. Most of the time, stepping back and creating space is safer than moving in.
Should I leave the room?
You can, and sometimes it helps. Say it out loud: "I am going to step into the hallway. I am not leaving the house. I will come back when we are both calmer." A child who fears abandonment needs to hear the plan, not just see you walk away.
What do I tell siblings?
Tell them the truth in age-appropriate words: "Your sibling's body is having a hard time. It is not about you. We are going to make sure everyone is safe." Siblings need a plan for where to go when it is happening. Let them help you make one.
Is it okay to call for help?
Yes. If you or a child is in immediate danger, call 988 or 911. If things feel near that line but not over it, call the child's therapist, your pediatrician's after-hours line, or a trusted friend. Asking for help is not losing. It is what the Nurturing Network is for.
How do I know if we need residential or higher-level care?
If everyone in the home is unsafe, if outpatient support is not shifting the pattern after weeks or months, or if your own capacity to stay regulated is running out, it is time to talk with the care team about higher-level support. Those are trail decisions, not failures. A good team will walk through them with you.
Will this ever get better?
For most children, yes, given time, steadiness, and the right support. The story is long and it is rarely linear. What you are building tonight is not a single good moment. You are building a body that learns, over many months, that it does not have to fight the room to stay safe in it.
